24 ways: Chronically ugly in Opera

24 ways: Chronically ugly in Opera by Lachlan Hardy.
I can understand choosing not to support certain browsers, but this is hardly graceful degradation. And without JavaScript, you can't even see the article content. I'm trying very hard not to be bitchy about an article that can't be seen with JavaScript off that advises ensuring the site content and functionality is available when JavaScript is off.

In that kind of scenario I use something along the lines of:
$(document).ready(function(){
// making sexy unobtrusive CSS possible since 2006
$("html").addClass("js");
});

But they're already using something of that ilk so it looks to be a simple error of omission.

Please fix.

That's a fair point, Jeremy. Admittedly, "Epic Fail" is not an expression I particularly care for but I'm not rigid in my policing of my language. I think I mostly used it in order to stick with the tag created by Ben Buchanan on Twitter (except I've just discovered that, as he's private, it's not being archived).

Given I posted this to send to Drew McLellan et al, I've updated the image with something a mite more useful.

Sorry, gentlemen, I was being a dick.

Ditch the term graceful degredation and go with progressive enhancement. Its emphasis is slightly different (even if some claim a matter of semantics) and things like this wouldn't be missing ;)

Actually, I think of them as complementary. You should consider both principles when developing for the web.

Lachlan, agreed about using both principles.

I usually describe them as being used in order:

1. Progressive Enhancement. You must be this high to ride, and no matter what height you are, you'll have a good experience.

2. Graceful degradation. What if you are a tiny bit too small, or a tiny bit too tall, and you got onto the ride anyway. What happens next is up to you (the designer).

While I don't really think it's really "personal opinion" to say the site is broken, I do take the point that a jokey hash tag (even posted privately) isn't an ideal way to express my thoughts on the subject. I'll lay off the hash tag and send an email instead.

Forget ugly. Try it in Linux FF. The 2 and 4 are on top of each other.

and you don't want to see it in the "corporate" browser ie6, the days run down the middle of the page, but at least the 2 and 4 don't cohabitat ;-)

We know we're not finished yet - don't worry. I know we have 11 months to get this thing ready each year, but it never works out that way in practise. In the end we decided to launch on time and fix it up as we go, knowing our audience are intelligent enough to get that.

We know the problems and will get them fixed. Have faith.

I just made a quick change so that the article isn't hidden without JavaScript. Not a full fix, but an improvement.

I've rolled out some more changes so that both content and comments work without JavaScript (as they should have done from the start).

@drewm it would of been easier (and works in Opera) if you gave your colour values as RGB first and the RGBA.. Browsers (IE6, IE7 & Opera) that don't understand RGBA will take the RGB values and ignore RGBA values (yes IE6 behaves correctly) while Browsers that understand RGBA will replace RGB with RGBA values.

If I understand what you're saying, nickobec, that's a good tip. I didn't build the CSS for the new design, but it sounds like that's something I'm going to have to try out in practise. Nice.

Opera 10 now implements RGBA (couldn't mention it before, but this is one big reason we've not been sweating Opera 9 support too much).
