A Big Scare Today [160/365]

A Big Scare Today [160/365] by Lab2112.
What started out as a promising day for a Project 365 idea I had in mind quickly got discarded with a terrifying turn of events today.

I normally don't talk about myself in the description of any given image I post, including how I felt before, during, or after I took a photo. Whether I was happy, sad, energetic, lazy, imaginative, unmotivated, or whatever it is I was feeling at the time is something that is ultimately besides the point, since the whole point for me is the photography itself, which also involves sharing, enjoying, and learning from other people's work -- all of which has helped me to grow as a photographer.

However, today, while my parents were visiting, along with my sister and her daughter, my mother had a severe asthma attack right after lunch. It was so severe that parademics had to be called; she could barely breathe. Each minute that passed she panicked more and more, frightening us since we were helpless to do anything until the ambulance arrived.

Ultimately my mother was stabilized, her breathing was restored, and she was able to leave hours later from the emergency room on her own two feet. However, there was a lot of hand-holding and hand-wringing involved, and a crushing sense of guilt that I haven't spent as much time with my own mother as a son should (and by extension, time that Marcus should be spending with his own grandmother). Needless to say, my desire to do anything interesting, clever, insightful, or otherwise different for Project 365 for today became completely nil. Today I was reminded of something far more important: that too often we take things for granted, even the health of those closest to us, and we should make an effort to spend as much time as possible with those people who are closest to our hearts. You never know if suddenly there will be no time left at all, and it shouldn't take a big scare to remind us of the obvious and what is truly important in this short life we have.

P.S. Sorry if I lag severely in commenting on your own photos, or replying to any e-mails or inquiries. As you might imagine, I'm still feeling rather distraught by the experience.

Maimonides Hospital, Fort Hamilton Parkway & 49th Street, Boro Park, Brooklyn, New York.

A scary thing to happen and I am glad to hear that she is OK now. The air quality in the city was bad for a couple of days in a row and perhaps that contributed to her attack.

Hey Lab..I am asthmatic and I can understand what she would have gone through..It's very scarey and you feel out of control. It must have been very hard for you and the rest of your family to just watch and it would make you feel helpless.Family is very important and you really do have to make a commitment to stay involved. That means everyone has to..it's not just a 1 person thing.Don't be hard on yourself and remember that it's never to late to reconnect with family. Not everyone has that choice or chance.
Project 365 will be there tomorrow !!
Great capture of sentiments in that photo !! Love it !!

I am so sorry to hear about your Mother, and am glad she stabilized well.Hope for extended good health for all your family.

You are right,It is all too easy to go about our daily lives,Jobs, children to care for, passions to pursue,LOL Many ppl need a reminder of how soon it can all end.I had a lesson in that as a teen when I lost my Mother,if anything can be said to be good about the early loss of a parent it is that I don't take forgranted my mortality( or others.) I am more apt to drive family crazy taking photos, and stress over difficulties that keep us apart than anything.I guess it isn't any easier being aware, since you cannot make everyone else realize the importance.

I hope you spend time to relax and calm down from the experience.Look forward to seeing you tomorrow when you approach your next 365. (Remember how important it is that you also record lifes experiences to the max to better remember later)

Lab - So sorry about your mom, I had a similiar experience with my dad being taken to the hospital on Monday & just let out yesterday. Luckily they just decided it was heat exhusion but I couldn't help but think about what if its something worse & I had all those same feelings as you about spending time together. Be with your family as much as you can & enjoy them!

I'm flagging this one as a favorite. Not due to the fact that it's a great image (which it is) but because it should serve as a reminder. I make it a point, and have since we met, to never let Wade and now Holly leave the house for any reason without saying I love you. I want the last thing out of my mouth and into thier ear to be that simple phrase... always.

If it were me, I would print this photo and put it on my fridge, so every time I went for food or drink, I'd see it, remember, and perhaps decide I DO have time to give a quick call to just say hello and I love you to my folks, after all, I have time for snacks. ;o)

Be well, be happy, be loved.
God bless.

Lou..I can't imagine anything more scary than not being able to breathe. I'm so sorry your mom went thru this.

On flickr we have seen the wonderful dad you are to your son. It speaks volumes about how wonderful your mother must be. Her family was there for her when she needed them the most so please don't feel guilty about anything. I'm betting she's at home tonight thinking what a good job she did in raising such caring children.

I know how you feel, Lou. Few years back I returned from a vacation, and that was back before email or cell phones were available to general masses including myself, just to find out my mom was recently taken to the hospital with a stroke. She wasn't even 45 y.o. yet. My relationship with her was never the same again, and though she lives across the ocean now, I cherish and value any kind of connection and communication I still have with her. It really changed my view on life and on relationships.

We will keep you and your family in our daily prayers. I hope things will keep improving and thank you for sharing this with us.

Gosh, Lou, what a horrible experience for all of you. Thank goodness that your Mum managed to come through it ok.

I think in occasions like these, we always think 'could we have done more?' 'could we have been a better son/daughter/parent?'. It's human nature. Watching the fragility of our own family is a horrible thing.

Your family are in my thoughts.

As for your photo, man, well, you still got a cracker! You jammy sod :)

Oh, Lou! You really had a hard day! It's terrible to see someone suffering, unable to really help. I'm so glad to read, that your mum feels better now.
In such situations its always hard for me to explain in english, what I want to say, I hope you understand me anyway.
Maybe this situation helps you to enjoy the time with you family more deliberately. I know, we just don't HAVE enough time to spend with your loves. There is so much to do all the time.
But if the time we actually spend together, is qualitative good, it gives us so much more, than just to be together.

Sorry, that pretty confusing, i guess...
Anyway, you and your dears are in my thoughts!

sometimes we need a wake up call to realize the preciousness of the gift of life.
Lou-I am glad for you that it turned out all right. May your mother recover quickly and fully.

as per your photograph:
the young man looks totally helpless - it almost looks like he has no arms.
wonderful shot (perhaps reflecting your own state of mind?)
I feel that Art is the artist revealing himself to himself and to others.
And this picture is Art.

Lou, I'm glad to hear that your mom bounced back rather quickly and I hope all continues to be well with her and your state of mind.

As for your image, I have to admit even seeing the thumbnail told me a different story than your images usually tell. Once I read your commentary, I was even more impressed with how your photo said much of what the words did. Well done, you are indeed an artist. Hopefully more days allow your art to come from your awesome sense of humor and wit than from stress or discomfort!

I have to confess that I didn't think I would get such a wonderful show of support and sympathy, since I was just trying to explain how, as the famous line went from "Of Mice and Men," all my plans went awry.

I'm deeply moved by everyone's collective well-wishing, good thoughts and prayers toward my mother and my family. It makes me feel that our little community here allows so many of us to connect with each other in ways that go beyond the art of photography. I'm very grateful to everyone who took the time to express all the kind words above, and any that may follow.

By the way, I called my mother the next day (this morning) to see how she was doing, and she actually apologized for having put me, my father, my sister, and everyone else through such a harrowing -- and very frightening -- ordeal. Of course she has nothing to be sorry for, but that just goes to show the kind of woman she is, putting others ahead of herself.

Anyway, thanks, everyone, for all the unsolicited condolences, and now I will return to the regularly scheduled journey that we all seem to be a part of on flickr.
