Strobist info: (also see graphic below in comments) the base is a piece of black opaque glass with a black foam core background. Light from a strobe is passing through a white diffuser (white sheet) and coming from the sides of the foam core on the left and right. Foam core gobos also on the left and right to let just a sliver of light on both sides. I was able to eliminate 99% of the front reflection, fixed a tiny bit in Photoshop.

I'm sure it's possible... knowing how would be the key to that. Just putting a bounce over top caused all sorts of undesired affects.
*edit: I re-shot this one and was able to get some more light on the rim.
