Full Moon at Perigee

i love this detail!
I do too.
Full Moon at Perigee by kukkurovaca.
Sweet. Got my 400mm f/5.6 ED AIS just in time for tonight's moon!

It was a bit tricky, because (a) I know nothing about astrophotography, and (b) there was plenty of cloud and fog and such. Nonetheless, I'm pretty pleased, all considered.

I agree. I like the subtle clouds too. What settings did you use? I went with f11, 1/125 shutter. Got pretty nice results but my lens only goes out to 300mm.

Awesome shot man.

Thanks, guys.

What settings did you use?

I believe this one was wide open (f/5.6) or maybe one stop down at 1/2 a second. (And of course I was losing a stop's worth of light because of the teleconverter.) Because of the clouds, exposure varied widely from shot to shot. : )

Really sweet kukku !
I like this one better than the two others, because the framing is a bit larger to include more than only the moon, and it makes it look much better to me. Sweet 400mm goodness

kukkurovaca  Pro User  says:

Thanks, everybody.

Ubz, I was using a 400mm f/5.6 ED AIS lens with a TC-14B teleconverter. (=560mm, which on my D40 is equivalent to 840mm on a film camera).

I was shooting on a sturdy tripod (Manfrotto 055XPROB w/486RC2 ballhead), using long shutter speeds and an aperture of f/5.6 or f/8. (I forget which in this specific case.) I activated the shutter with a remote. If my camera had mirror lockup, I would have used it.

I'm no astrophotographer -- I just used trial and error to get exposures that worked.

AIs lenses don't meter on D40, right?

Just shot, chimped, checked the histogram, and re-shot. I had to keep re-adjusting because as the clouds passed by, there was substantial variability in correct exposure...
