[2008.11.20] DIY litterboxes

[2008.11.20] DIY litterboxes by Katie Scully.
My little dudes are overenthusiastic litterbox diggers. I originally had a Booda Dome plus a smaller open box for them, but both boxes led to litter (and turds) all over the place. The top-loading boxes are crazy expensive for what they are (a bin with a hole in the lid) so I decided to make my own.

I took two filing bins and removed one lid-flap each. Filled with litter, and whooo! They're awesome. Rock & Roll happily dig away without covering my closet in litter. All I need now is to rig up some small mats on top to cut down on tracking.

There are dryer sheets there to help with the litter smell, though honestly, the boxes barely smell since I switched the kittens to Wellness.

They each have their own?

If they both have to go at the same time (usually happens after I feed them), whoever is in the box gets ambushed by the one who's outside.

Also, for some reason they like to pee in one box and poop in the other.

HAha, I was going to ask the same question. Cats are bizarre.

This could be really useful in my home. Do they pee and poo under the 'ceiling' or do they stay in the part where the lid is gone?

I have never seen this type of litter box in Holland, that's why i ask :)

They go under both sides.

I've switched to a single larger bin since the cats have gotten bigger, and they tend to go on the covered side. I think they've learned that this keeps their paws cleaner when they jump in :)

And no poo on the lids? I can see my big cat turning around to go and hitting the lid. Ew. Perhaps the boxes are deeper than I'm visualizing?

PS Wellness is awesome. I second your vote.

The boxes are (were) much deeper. They were deep enough that the kittens could squat in the front of it and not hit their heads on the lids. Each box was probably... 2 feet high?

I think I'll take a picture of the new setup later today :)

They're on EVO canned chicken & turkey right now... Wellness was a bit too carb-y for them. I also incorporate a little bit of raw into their diets (chicken wings, hearts, livers), but since I don't have the resources to give them whole prey I give them mostly canned so they're getting nutritionally-complete meals :)

Looks like a great solution to a common problem! *Where did you purchase the bins?
