Kris Kros  Pro User  says:

@el zorro: I'm pretty sure that you are one of those who hate HDRs no matter what.

But nevertheless, I need to answer back since you brought your slimy remarks on my photostream.

You said,

the problem with HDR rendered images is that right now they don't look real - the toning is wrong.

Well, what do you know then. As a seasoned practitioner of HDR after producing hundreds and was featured on New York Times because of what I produced, I can rebuke what you said.

In my opinion, HDR is another tool available not only to photographers but to everyone who is involved in pictures like film industries, arts and most specially, the 3D world of images.

Most definitely, HDR can produce a real life scene with a litte bit of a WOW effect just to be different from a normal photography. And in your definition, I believed that's what you called the "Right Toning."

But I totally disagree. And here's why.

For me, I use HDR to express my ART. As I've mentioned when I was interviewed by New York Times, you can easily turn a normal photo that is well composed into something like a painting. Hence, it becomes a real work of art.

HDR does not have to be just a mere saturation, contrast or color tool. Photoshop and others can do that. This is a special tool that, in my honest opinion, elevates photography into another realm of art.

Now art can be loved or can be hated. As the saying goes, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

HDR rendered photos will never be exactly how you see the world. It's another way of capturing a scene that will never be repeated in artistic way.

My HDRs have evolved tremendously in a short period of time.

I'm proud of all my HDRs including this picture. It was my art, my way of expression and will always be proud of what I came up for my flickr friends and others to view.

I don't know exactly what was your agenda in coming to my photostream and yanked out that "toning is wrong."

My toning or my rendition could be wrong for you. But let me tell you that my HDRs have inspired so many flickrites to try their hands on HDR. Even some great ones.

And the picture above, by the way, was printed in the New York Times edition when I was featured. And also featured prominently on flickr Explore.

And HDR made me popular. Can you believe that?

janoid  Pro User  says:

BRAVO!!!
I agree with everything you said, Joe!
HDR is process that is applied by the photographer to his/her taste, to acheive the effect he/she chooses. It can be quite realistic, or very artistic, the result being a personal rendering of the original photo(s). It is another tool, to be used (or not) in the amazing and broadening medium of digital photography!

I appreciate your exploration with HDR! You have opened up the technique to show how versatile it is, and to expose the process and it's possibilities to many people, like myself, who would have never otherwise known much about it!

I am grateful that you choose to share your vast and versatile talent, which inspires us to try new techniques, and to push the medium of digital photography into digital art!!!
BRAVO!!!

P.S. LOL about that "popular" comment!! I have no doubt that you were a star LONG before you ever dabbled in HDR!! :)

ms4jah  Pro User  says:

Hi Joe,
Thanks to all your relenteless hdr images I finally figured I should try hdr. I found out it was not easy, But I loved the results so much I quickly paid $100 for the software. I never would have done that if not for your influence.

Hey, I just thought of something, maybe you should speak to the people at photomatix. Maybe they will sponser you or something. You help make them so much money!! Hahahah!. True.

Although I don't do hdr too often, I am so glad I have this as one option in my 'bag of tricks' as a photographer. I know that if I have to or If I want to, I can use to hdr effect to produce a result that I could not get otherwise. It is another valuable tool that I have now learned to use. And the truth is, it was hard and frustrating to learn how to use it. The average person will never do it.

merkley???  Pro User  says:

hey joe,

no need to justify your art to some ignoramus that can't even wrap his head around the glaring fact that there is never any right or wrong in art and that it's all totally subjective -- you do what you do and you do it well.

holy crap, the level of doofusness just never ceases to bore me.

GO KRIS KROS!!

You rock Joe... let 'er rip!
Some people just won't ever get it. It's not meant to look like a regular picture a photograph... it's a work of art. You have every right to be proud of every HDR you've ever done... I'm proud right along with you. You are a true artist in every sense of the word and a fabulous photographer as well. A delightful combination- Way to go!

Dear Joe,
it's an old trick.
He's envious about your work and popularity and try this technique, to attack you so all the people know him.
Infact he puts some of his images on your very visible photostream...
The best is to ignore, if someone don't like...click away...

merkley???  Pro User  says:

who ever once said HDR is to make things look more REAL?

realism in art is pretty much an oxymoron anyway.
Posted 35 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

merkley???  Pro User  says:

"fanboyism"
hardly.

you just say dumb shit -- that's all, i know my way around art, it's no foreign subject to me.

but since you seem to be hooked on the subject of "realism", the photomatix people have certainly explained it better than you have. when one stands in front of an orange van and studies it, one's irises enlarge and contract depending on where one is looking therefore making it easy for one to see details that a flat print from a camera ignores. hdr compensates for that a bit by giving you the detail that fully enlarged irises might give as well as tightly contracted ones.

i know it can be hard to grasp the concept that even printed words on a page describing an event -- even without pictures -- might also be described as "realism" -- which is why i called you an ignoramus for failing to comprehend that "realism" is purely subjective and based upon the story and the details an artist wishes to convey.

example:
dreams are real.

Love your response to el_zorro. I think people who are jealous try to put down great photos because they are just plain negative...
And they want to think they can find something wrong.

I'd agree though, great/quality HDR's make you popular!

Great work!

pixability  Pro User  says:

Joe, great work gains recognition and critics. el_zorro obviously falls into the later category. Myy question is why would someone so repulsed by such photographic works click on the image and further comment on it. I suspect it goes deeper and likely does not deserve a responce.

On a personal note I appreciate your HDR work and that of so many others on flickr. It is new, and that threatens the "experienced" dogmatic bound photographers as "un-authentic". But I believe just as color was accepted and BW retained, there is a place for HDR with any level of tonemapping. The work I've seen is compelling and prompted me to dabble as well. Thank you and simply count the admiration against the mean spirited detraction. The balance is clear.

Well I must add that I for one am inspired by your work Joe, and now I've got the HDR bug ( THANKS a lot... lol). I'm in no way in ( or anyway near) your league of HDR photography Joe but I have to say it's given me a great hobby (that's turning into a passion).
I'm just a beginner at this stage but LOVE it. I cruise your photo stream when ever I get the chance and no matter how many times I view your work I for one can NEVER get sick of it. I read all the links you share with us about HDR and can't thank you enough for all the advice you share with us on flickr.
So all I can say is keep up the BRILLIANT work and I look forward to viewing you pics in the future.
