Sunrise in the lower 48
To make this image, I downloaded thumbnails for about 17,000 sunrise photos taken in the vicinity of the continental US, and then positioned them according to where they were taken.
The photos are blended at 10% opacity to form a heat map. The state outlines come from US census data. I used ImageMagick for rendering, and the Perl library Geo::Coordinates::UTM for converting latitude and longitude to a UTM projection. Compare this to the previous photo, which shows sunsets. In this image, there are proportionally more photos taken from the western edges of bodies of water (because sunrises look nice over water). Commentskrazydad / jbum

Maybe east coasters are just early risers and west coasters know how to appreciate a good sleep in? :-) Very cool graphs.
