Waiting for the Elevator
Just got back from a long weekend in Wanganui (Geo tagged). There is a monument on top of a high hill over looking this coastal town. The residents wanted an easy way to get to the top.
Instead of a cable car or gondola, they constructed a 205 metre tunnel at the foot of the hill and a 66 metre vertical elevator shaft. Built in 1919, it still operates today with an Elevator Lady who collects $2 from each passenger.
There are only two such elevators in the world, so if anyone knows where the other one is, I would be interested to know :)
