Don Diego at Edina (Elmina)

Don Diego at Edina (Elmina) by amaah.
Illustration accompanying Kwesi Brew's poem Don Diego at Edina (Elmina) from his 1995 collection Return of No Return. The poem is part of a series imagining the encounter of Africa with Europe. What were the protagonists thinking, I wonder?

And the brown in the King's eyes thickened darkly over
The presage of gold on hands of iron, gold, gold, gold.
Will there be enough gold to dampen these fierce appetites,
Will there be enough gold, Kyeame?
