Ground Cuckoo-shrike (Coracina maxima)

Goolgowi, NSW, Australia.

We were lucky to find a couple of these reasonably rare Cuckoo-shrikes on the side of the road as we travelled between Willandra and Griffith. They're only found in inland Australia, and are the only Australian Cuckoo-shrike adapted to foraging mostly on the ground, as this one was doing when it caught this grasshopper. Adults have a black mask, so this one is probably an immature or sub-adult bird.
