Rainbow with Lightning

A tornado hit my home town of Joplin, Missouri this afternoon, just an hour west of where Iive in Republic, Missouri (near Springfield). Though my family and most of my friends live in the north part of Joplin and were unaffected, the devastation looks terrible on the news. The storm did little in Republic, but afterwards this is how the sky looked.

Lucky, lucky shot! We were out there taking pictures of the rainbows (as was everyone else) and saw the lightning and thought there was no way to capture it. And you did! Excellent!

Cool capture. I wished the Nikon was working.

Yes, very lucky. The lightning wasn't flashing very often. On Facebook, there is a better one posted by the Logan-Rogersville fire district:

Oh man! I like yours better! Much cleaner looking. I wanted to get this so bad but couldnt pull it off. Perhaps I wasn't patient enough. Excellent job Frank!
Submit this to KOLR 10 and KYTV! I seen some on there they thought were good but not as good as this!
Also, glad to hear your family is doing well.

Really great capture. Rarely do you ever see lightning flashing when there are two rainbows in the same photo. Where I am, I don't get lightning flashing whenever there are any rainbows outside, but then, I stay inside whenever there is lightning. And hopefully everybody there is safe.

That's really fantastic. Sorry to see all the damage that's been done over there. The houses just seem to fly apart, are they mostly wooden structures?

We just missed the rainbows at my place.

So this is lightening over a (double) rainbow in a tornado? Just wow is right...because there are no words to do this justice.

I don't think that I have ever seen lightning and a rainbow at the same time. This was a great capture, by the way. I am sorry to hear about the destruction in Missouri. In the Northeast we don't get many tornadoes.

Beautiful nature, but so deadly. I was in Joplin today searching for survivors. Devastating.

What focal length, shutter speed and ISO did you use? So far, I have had poor luck getting a rainbow to show up this saturated.

Catching lightning is so difficult...very good job!!
