Badwater Highway - desolate and inviting

Badwater Highway - desolate and inviting

A view from Badwater Highway, south of Mormon Point looking at the Amargosa Mountain Range that forms the eastern valley of Death Valley National Park.

Wildflower beds line both sides of the highway during the short wildflower bloom season.

California Poppies (Eschscholzia californica) in bloom - Mormon Point

California Poppies (Eschscholzia californica) in bloom - Mormon Point

Rare wildflowers bloom in the short spring season inside Death Valley National Park. The lowest point in North America, Badwater Basin (282ft below sea level) is in the background. This place also holds the record for the hottest temperature on record in the United States at 132F. It is very hot year round with temperatures of 120F being the norm rather than the exception. Yet life does find a way to flourish in this forbidding landscape.
