I'm not very good at stem stitch either but I love the look of it so I started doing it backwards. I work it like a back stitch but angle it. That way if the stitch doesn't fall right where I want it, I can kind of nudge it over. Hope this helps. Oh, and I love this!

GroggyFroggy's suggestion is just what I suggest as well. I hate having to poke up through the fabric over and over again to get the thread in just the right spot for stem stitch. I just do it like a back stitch, and in my opinion, it looks great. You can only tell from the back that it's not done the same...

Thanks for the suggestions! I've gotten a lot better at stem stitch, thankfully, and am really pleased with my progress. I'll have to take a picture of the finished item and post it soon.
