Neooreophilus nummularius (Rchb. f.) Archila

    Newer Older

    Forma xantina / Xanthic form

Neooreophilus nummularius was the first described species for this miniature Orchid genus, Reichenbach described it in 1856 as Lepanthes nummularia from a collection near Quito, Ecuador, separating it in Section Brachycladae, section that was later separated in its own genus Brachycladium by Luer, and because this name was found to be invalid, was renamed finally as Neooreophilus by Archila.

This species grows in the Andes from Colombia to Peru, in cloud forests between 1700-2900 meters over sea level where it grows as an epiphytic hanging from moss covered tree branches and trunks, and the flowers can be dull yellow, yellow-orange, brown, to red-purple and measuring only from 4 to 5 mm high.

As it has been documented for one other species of the genus, it is quite possible that the flowers are pollinated by pseudocopulation of fungus gnats from the Sciaridae family.

      Hi.

As this picture is (happily for me) getting a lot of attention, let me write a little about this plant (see comments below the picture) for those who don´t know what this flower is.

      Regards,

      Sebastian
