Blood River monument wagons

Blood River monument wagons

These wagons are part of the monument on the site of Blood River battle. The battle between the Boer Trekkers and the Zulu Impi took place on December 16th, 1838. The Boers numbering 470 along with some 200 servants were armed with single-shot rifles and small cannons. They were surrounded by the Zulu (estimated 10000 - 15000) who were using short spears to battle.

The Trekkers made a covenant (vow) to God to keep the day holy should they be delivered from the battle. Their tactic was to form a circle (laager) with their wagons and shoot outwards. By using the woman, children and servants to continually reload their weapons, the Boers managed to get a shot off every 5 seconds. Also the short spears were ineffective in piecing the Boer laager. In the subsequent fighting some 3000 Zulu were killed without loss to the Boer Trekkers.

The day was first commemorated as "The day of the Vow" and today as "The day of Reconciliation".
