Well you see, Andrew, a cute librarian boy was talking to me in the stacks, so I was leaning against a bookshelf trying to look all cool, laughing and tilting my head back trying to show him the alluring whiteness of my throat, when all of a sudden my weight caused the bookcase to collapse and then the domino effect took over! :( :(

Er, I heard that somebody tripped and knocked over a bookcase and then the rest fell over. It was in a library-turned-book-storage facility, so no one was around or got hurt. The preservation unit (that's me!) was called in to help get stuff out of there.

I heard about this! It was the subject of much discussion down in cataloging on Thursday. The shelving looks pretty totaled -- hope that there wasn't much damage to the books themselves.

Most are intact, but some were caught in between shelves and got ripped apart. I would have taken photos of that as well, but there were only so many moments I could stand around taking pictures before I felt like a morbid jerk that wasn't helping anybody. Some of the shelves are severely bent, but I don't know much about how salvegable it all is.

Someone broke into my High School (Gables '76!) library one night and did just this, except that there were like twenty huge book stacks lined up like dominoes that went down. When they set them back up, it was in a different arrangement, much less prone to disaster....

Yikes!

Our business was original movie posters and we used metal frame shelving...when we put it up, one of our employees figured out to make braces across the top of each aisle so that the shelves couldnt fall over....again.

Paper is HEAVY stuff!!!

:)
Glad no one was hurt

I've always wanted to see what would happened if one of the shelves in the library fell onto the next. Would the momentum knock over the next shelf? Thanks. Now I know.

This sort of thing happened in our university library back in the late 1980s - the aftermath of a major earthquake. It totally freaked out the students and injured many people. Not a very amusing experience...

It looks like some of the ceiling tiles got thrown clear in the accident as well... true??

I didn't see any ceiling tiles on the floor, so I don't think so? But a window did get smashed.

Over 4,000 views?! What website linked me?

You should add these photos to the "Libraries & Librarians" group! It's all of our worst nightmare.

I was vaguely amused at this, some tv commercials coming to mind, but when I saw that it was from the U of I Library, I was horrified! I worked there a few decades back and was just last night regaling a former grade school classmate with my take on why the U of I Library was one of the world's greatest libraries (he was under the mistaken impression that U of Texas had a better library). Possibly the Schools of Engineering and Architecture should be called in to survey the facilities to prevent further damage to that great collection!

Hahha, at first I didn't tag it with UIUC, but now I feel like I ought to. The accident took place in the old History library on the 4th floor. I guess that means they moved the collection to a better, safer place.

To all the librarians here - haven't there been times when you really wanted to do this on purpose, though?

Or is it just me?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Howard's End.

I do believe OSHA would tell you to install the shelves so that can't happen...

I was also thinking along the lines of The Mummy! LOL Thanks for beating me to this punch, daichan00. I followed the link from The Laughing Librarian blog (http://www.laughinglibrarian.com/). Must of been interesting to watch, but a pain to clean up after!! Makes me thankful that my shelves aren't lined up this way in my library.
