Eurasian Thick-Knee (Burhinus oedicnemus)

Also known as Stone-Plover and Stone Curlew, The Eurasian Thick-knee inhabits dry woodlands, dried river-beds and wastelands in semi arid and arid regions. It can stand almost motionless for hours under shady parts or sit with long yellow legs stretched forward, bent at the characteristic thick knees.

Baralacha Pass with prayer flags by Koshyk

Baralacha Pass with prayer flags

Baralacha pass on the route from Manali, Himachal Pradesh, India to Leh, Ladakh situated 16,500 feet above mean sea level (MSL) is an imposing place. Tibetan (Ladakhi) Buddhist prayer flags adorn most passes as the high velocity winds at the passes are believed to help the flags flutter and thus carry the pryaers written on them to reach Heaven. Yellow, green, white, red and blue flags represent earth, water, fire, clouds and sky respectively.

Qutub Minar & Alai Darwaza by Koshyk

Qutub Minar & Alai Darwaza

Qutub Minar and Alai Darwaza are two very important examples of the so called Indo-Islamic architecture. Neither is it a local variant of the Islamic architecture nor a product of the evolution of the local Hindu architectural style, but a splendid amalgamation of two different streams of art of construction, as a result of the spontaneous mingling and interaction. These two monuments, built over a Century apart (1202 ~1311) represent two significant advancements in the process. While the brick and mortar tower embellished with fluted, engraved sides is probably the most majestic of the early Sultanate period, Alai Darwaza, on the other hand celebrates the coming of age of local artisans. This is the oldest surviving proper dome in the country. Earlier attempts, significantly in the tombs of Balban and Iltutmish, failed and the domes collapsed.
