View from the Porto riverfront south towards Vila Nova de Gaia. The boat is the kind that was once used to bring port wine down the river from the vineyards in the eastern part of the country, near the border with Spain, to the lodges in Porto. They now use trucks and trains, but keep a few of these anchored near the touristy areas. I have no idea why that might be.

Taken from the Dish area of Stanford University. I was trying to get diffracting rays of sunlight through the tree branches to be visible. It had just rained/was raining at the time, a fact which is noticeable by the presence of three water droplets in the image (see if you can spot them!)

Looking up into one of the small domes in the roof of St Peter's Basilica. The camera was on the floor, pointing up (n.b., people are not allowed to be sitting on the floor of St Peter's, although cameras are); since I couldn't look through the viewfinder to compose the image I aligned the camera using only the grid formed by tiles on the floor. It's amazing to me that the dome is almost perfectly aligned to that.
