i am a fan of taking postcards of my hometown to give away (with address on it for friends) and/or a small photoalbum (paperbacked japanese style one takes up little room) of family, home, life etc. While they seem boring or plain, documentary photos are the killer conversations starters (and time killers) when stuck on train or meeting or something with folks speaking a different langauge.

I also always take watercolor pencils for spontaneous art making and a killer novel from (or dealing with) the country i am going to.

Good call on the Moleskine notebook. Take favorite pen(s) so you'll actually write in it.
