Dr. Jane Goodall, Wyoming

Dr. Jane Goodall, Wyoming by Irene Roxanne (aka Irena Kittenclaw).
While attending the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film fest, I had the good fortune to see Dr. Jane Goodall speak to a crowd of mostly children as part of the UN International Day of Peace.

Attending and being a judge for this film fest served as an urgent reminder that we are living in a critical time. Our actions - such as supporting laws that protect the environment/wilderness, recycling, riding a bike, ditching toxic corporate products in favor of environmentally friendly ones - can make a difference.

The winner of the festival was Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action - a powerful, disturbing, and also promising film. Another recommendation - the PBS series Strange Days on Planet Earth (narrated by Edward Norton). And for stunning cinematography, an ode to earth and family, and loads of visual sugar - Earthling.

*Important Update: The House of Representatives will vote this week on a dangerous bill that would strip America's endangered wildlife of many crucial safeguards. If it passes, this legislation would abolish critical habitat protections for threatened and endangered species -- a vital part of wildlife recovery efforts - - and exempt the pesticide industry from key regulations. Large-scale land developers, as well as the mining and oil industries, would profit at the expense of our most vulnerable wildlife.

Please go to
www.nrdcactionfund.org/esa/action.asp?step=2&item=53044
and send an email urging your Representative to help defeat H.R. 3824.

I saw her speak years ago in Massachusetts. Right before the event started, she walked right by me and I swear I was in the presence of God. I love her so much.

Thanks Moufle! Traveling is one of my most favorite things to do, but in September I visited California, Wyoming, and Texas, and for the first time in my life I don't want to see a plane for several months. Typically I get a charge just going to the airport and smelling the fumes, but right now the streets of New York will do. Thanks again for your wonderful comments.

Thanks so much, Cuquix!!

I like the idea of your group - - that age shouldn't be an issue - - but ironically the title of the group very much makes it an issue. I hope I don't seem rude, but I think there's a better way of trying to say what you're trying to say.

Hi Irena,

Thank you for your comments.

First, Jane Goodall is one of my most admired women (another is Rita Levi-Montalcini who was incredibly active until her dead at 99).

Second, I agree with you about the name of the group, and in fact I'm going to open a debate to find one more appropiate on what I'm trying to say (I am Spanish and have language problems). No, I'm not talking about hollywood stars, gyms and botox, although the inside is reflected outside, as in JG. Any ideas for the name?

Hi Cuquix! I can't think of a name either...I'm terrible when it comes to titling a project. I work in documentary TV and naming things is, for some inexplicable reason, very hard. I'll try and see if anything comes to me...

And if anyone else who is reading this has suggestions... :o)

Thank you Irena ! I´ve been thinking for several days, but there seem not to be words (yet) to express what means aging ... well.

How about 21st century Griots (the Historians and wise ones in African cultures) or just the Wise Ones? At some point us baby boomers have to step into our places as the Wise Ones and Goodall certainly led the way.

Thanks Irena and yeimaya for your interest ! 21st century Griots or the Wise Ones are very creative ideas. We baby boomers will age differently than previous generations, and have to react on the situation of our planet an the humankind. Goodall is an amazing inspiration !
