front beds midsummer 2005This bed has a never-ending rotation of starts mixed in among a variety of mint and a few remaining pansies. Strawberries in front, leeks in middle, mint in back. hard to find thymes (lime, caraway, lavender) at the base of the magnolia. This corner had flowering annuals the first couple of years for color. The sage bed with full moon maple. Azalea. Ornamentals start here and mix with herbs down the side of the driveway. ![]() ![]() The historians believe this is the earliest known picture of this portion of the herb garden. It appears to have been taken shortly after we pulled up the rhododendron that had been where the full moon maple is now, dug out the corner of grass and started planting herbs.

Note the size and shape of the full moon maple - this is one of those wonderful Japanese maples that, given thoughtful pruning, develop into gorgeous architectural structures. (This was a gift from some special people for my birthday and it spent the previous winter in a planter which had me sort of worried.) The tree in the far bed in a small, slow growing magnolia that will need to be moved before too many years pass.
