I expect they're the same size as the baby in the peanut (same price). There's a three-inch baby doll in that one.

that's a little extreme... I'm surprised people would go that far back then to really offend someone.. :(

For God's sake Americans! This wasn't "offensive" back then, to whites or blacks! Many people are shocked by such things, but that just goes to show how your history has been quietly erased from the collective memory. And who in America today knows that there were blacks who owned white slaves?

@ ST PAUL

Are you for real? Where are you from, man?

A. This wasnt offensive to Whites back then because Blacks did not have the same social status that Whites did. This is like looking at a German mail order catalog from 1936 and seeing "Jew in a Pennybank".

B. It wasnt offensive to Blacks of the day because, let's face it: If you were a black American living anywhere in the US in 1929, this was NOTHING compared to the open racism so prevalent in everyday life.

C. Blacks have owned Whites as slaves. But not in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina or any of the other slave states in the American South. Or anywhere in the US.

D. Our history has not been quietly erased from the collective memory. It's been mythologized. There are people who can't get past it, both black and white. The way it's taught in schools varies according to demographics, all the way up to College level.

Black/White Racism and Slavery are two facets of our history that have melded into an ugly, sleeping monster that only pretends to be dead. Observe the finite details of the upcoming election and it's aftermath. You'll see.

$1.35 per dozen Darkeys in a Watermelon.

Why were there bulk prices for this object?

For people who were resellers... the wholesale business didnt exist the way it does today. Small business owners ordered from the same sources that consumers did:

My great-grandfather ran a general store in central Alabama, and my grandfather used to tell me stories about helping him mail out the paperwork for orders from Sears and Johnson Smith. That, and how you could buy guns mail order just like any other item, including automatic weapons until 1933.

How bizarre.
