Stair to top floor from right.

Stair to top floor from right. by Ctd 2005.
This is a job where we gutted EVERYTHING and yet wanted to make it somewhat historical looking. The owner had both a shaker elemental utility look he wanted and to the Japanese for their use of storage under stairs as part of designing space. this is what I came up with. All but Newells, ballasters, treads & Drawer boxes (all subbed)the railings and faces & trim were made on site. Railings are out of 12/4 plank of Mohogany and all the trim is poplar treads are beech.

I like the way the rail curves to the bottom post.

Thank you EllieJ, much of the detail is based on civil war era staircases in nearby row houses. I referred to that lower sweep as a Swan's Neck, it is laid out fullsize on a patterning board, then a finessed, finish pattern is made, dropped to the plank and cut & shaped. Here's Looking down from top & Here's Looking up from first second step

Here's a bigger Two-way sweep (same project).
