Convict Lake

In 1871 a group of escaped convicts from the Nevada State Penitentiary in Carson City had a shootout with the Mono County posse chasing them. The leader of the posse was shot and killed by one of the convicts. The high peak on the far side of the lake was named Mount Morrison in honor of the fallen posse leader. Most of the convicts were caught and some were hanged by vigilantes.

I made a quick trip to the coast yesterday afternoon. It was a gorgeous day with lots of big waves rolling in and not too windy. In fact there was so much spray in the air from the surf I gave up on the idea of trying to shoot regular beach shots. When I saw these footsteps in the sand I immediately thought of that epic line from the closing scenes of the original Planet of the Apes:

"We finally really did it. You maniacs!
You blew it up! Damn you.
God damn you all to hell!"
