58/365 apple or orange?

I'm making some major headway in saving up for a dslr, so it's time to start doing my research, hopefully trying out some rentals, and so on. Based on what I've been finding out so far, I'm leaning toward getting a Nikon over a Canon (still don't know which model though). This will be my first slr, so I'd love to hear your thoughts... if you have 'em.

totw: gratitude - thanks to brian for going on and on and on about the many things I should think about when it comes to cameras. ;)

Awesome first try with textures!! :)
This is a sweet photo - I have yet to try something like this.

I don't know much about DSLR's this is my first and it's a Canon XS. I just got it in October so I'm still new! Sorry! :)

Well conceived diptych - good luck with your decisions. You could do worse than check out the flickr groups of the cameras you are interested in to see what folk have to say about them.

You are going to get an equal number of answers from the supporting throng. I love my Canon (D40) and I think canon lenses are superior to the nikon lenses .... that said, the very high end Nikons seem much better with high ISO levels. But, we are talking the high end. I think low end, the bodies are identical .. and it's just a preference over lenses. And, again, I think canon lenses are better.

      The pic is awesome!!

I don't know how to do diptychs. I do own two Nikon DSLRs, D70 and D80. I have so much to learn about digital photography, but using them has made me braver in a lot of ways. Since you like video, you should go for the D90 if you're thinking about Nikon.

      thanks! :)
good advice - I will definitely be taking a look!
You admit it! You bought me a sub-par apple! :P
      thanks!
true, they both have their supporters - thanks for tossing in your two cents!
this is where I learned how to create diptychs (in PS) if you're ever curious -- thanks for the tip about the D90! The more I can distinguish between the different models, the better.

*cough* canon... go canon... i loved my 400 to start with. 450 is even a better start :) and you get live view which helps when its the 1sr slr. not to mention i love my 5d... best baby ever :)

      Nikon ;) I love my D40.

Though I grew up with both Nikons and Canons (pre-digital naturally) and they are both great makes ;)

first, that's an awesome shot! on the camera, eh, i'm with tyla. canon ftw! just know you are making a choice that will haunt you for a long time. once you start buying glass, you will never switch. check out dpreview if you haven't yet. i went canon elan, 1N, nothing (a sad time--point and shoots only), 450, 40D, 5Dmkii. Also, i would say the more important aspect (since the cameras are really so close to eachother) is how easy they are for you to use, so make sure you try 'em out!
