Dominick Flatley's home
Dominick Flatley was born in Knock, Ireland in 1876 - an area in northwest Ireland where farming was tough due to the many stones in the fields. These stones were used to make the walls surrounding the fields and many young men, including Dominick, became talented stone masons. Dominick came to America aboard the ship Campania, arriving at Ellis Island, NY on May 13, 1899. He left Ireland in a "huff" because tradition dictated that the family farm was going to be given to the oldest son. Dominick returned to Ireland to spread the word that there was opportunity in the United States and he was sure that he could "make it in America". His final task in Ireland was to build a beautiful stone barn. He carved his initials "DF 1904" in stone (see arrow in photo) high on the side of the structure and left for America - arriving on May 14, 1904 once again on the ship Campania. Dominick settled in Manchester-by-theSea, MA and began a contracting business: Flatley & Morley. He became a citizen of the United States on February 19, 1906. He married Nora Flatley. Nora was from Bekan Parish - Lake Calentra, Ireland. Together they raised seven children - 4 boys and 3 girls. Sadly, the youngest son, Francis "Snookie" Flatley, drowned at age seven while swimming in Manchester Harbor. A lollipop became stuck in his throat when he dove from the town float. Dominick arrived in America with a fourth grade education. His strength was that he knew the value of LAND and the need for EDUCATION.
