Morning at Doxey Pool. A small pool of ink black water sitting on top of the outcrop of rocks known as "The Roaches". I don't think I have ever visited a place as eerie as this, even on a windy day the water seems never to show as much as a ripple. So many legends attached to this place they are too numerous to mention. My favourite is that it's supposed to be bottomless...
Another story is that of a mermaid or spirit that bathes in the pool.
"a great thing rose up from the middle of the lake . . . 25 to 30 feet tall . . . and those eyes were extremely malevolent. It pointed its bony fingers menacingly at me so there was no mistaking its hostility . . ."
Written by Mrs Florence Pettit who visited the pool for a swim with a friend in 1949.
