2Decide.com Election '08 Chart of Where the Candidates Stand by kentbye.
data via www.2decide.com/table.htm
I reorganized the candidates to be grouped by Democrats and Republicans with the highest rated candidates ordered from left to right (approximately)

*EDIT*
Since this has been featured in a couple of places, I just wanted to bump this additional note from the comments to explain a little bit more about this infographic.

To clarify again, I remixed all of the data from http://2decide.com/table.htm -- they're the ones who did the research into the issues from the candidate's websites, and they did the original layout of all of this data.

However, they ordered the candidates in alphabetical order and not even by political party. And it spanned across multiple pages, and so it was very difficult to get a gestalt overview of the core differences between the two parties on the issues.

So I took a screenshot of all of the data at http://2decide.com/table.htm, and then first split it between the Democrats and Republicans, and then ordered it by the candidates with the highest polling numbers from left to right using info from www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/us/democr... & www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/us/republ... The ordering is approximate since it was really difficult to get a precise ordering after the top 3-4 in each party.

I then overlaid a transparent blue and red over the candidates to prove my suspicion correct in that there are a lot of issues where there is a near black and white split between parties. If I would have placed Kucinich further to the right, then you'd probably see an even more homogenized field since he's more on the progressive fringe. And it's pretty noticable that libertarian-minded Ron Paul really lives up to his "Dr. No" moniker.

There are no independents listed, and only people who have officially declared their intentions of running and have a campaign site -- as far as I understand how 2decide.com aggregated the info.

Exactly what or how much, rather, does support or lack thereof re the death penalty have to do with being president? This was an issue created by George H.W. Bush and Lee Atwater back in the '80s. Probably 99.9 percent of all those sentenced to death in any given year, however, are sentenced by state judges, over whom the president has no say in picking. And there was no precedent for declaring a general death penalty unconstitutional back in the late '80s. There still isn't now. The Supreme Court has declared the death penalty unconstitutional for mentally challenged persons and minors. It has looked into cases involving whether those receiving the death penalty is cruel in particular cases, and through particular methods.

I can think of so many other issues that the federal govt. is more involved with, or that are relevant to policymaking at the federal level--say, putting up "support for infrastructural development. And what about economic issues? The prez is much, much more involved in those than anything involving the frickin' death penalty.

Thank you for putting up this useful table. This is the kind of thing I hope to see in the mainstream media, but instead it's always the horserace crap. I read about your table on Boing Boing, so expect a lot more hits!

So only two candidates support same-sex marriage? That's fucked up.

VOTE RALPH NADER OF THE GREEN PARTY..The only candidate to:
- run consecutive Years
- never get invited to political debates or media sessions
- actually committed to fighting greenhouse gases, nature preservation, marijuana legalization (inclusive of less harsh penalties for those purchasing it)
- actually capable of cleaning up America

AND LASTLY,
The only candidate despite all of the above, to still manage to hold a substantial number of votes each year. Make the smart choice, and vote GREEN!

Nice graphic. Too bad for both parties that's there's virtually no diversity of positions with the parties, and too bad for all of us that the dividing line is so stark.

Good stuff, but I'd love to see some other issues addressed: Fairtax, lack of third-party candidates, distinction between foreign and domestic wiretapping, etc.

there are third party candidates..it's just that they don't get any attention. Green party has basically been a 3rd party for a long time, they actually get a good deal of votes - the media ignores them despite this. The green party has actually been lobbying for Climate Control laws years before Al Gore became the posterboy for the cause.

Americans are sick of politicians, they want change - but given the option they only want more of the same lying, deceit and exploitation. C'est la vie.

After looking at the chart it makes Ron Paul seem *not* as good as everyone on Digg thinks he is.

This chart lists Richardson's position on No Child Left Behind as "unknown".

I attended a long Q&A session with Richardson at the YearlyKos conference this weekend. In his introductory speech, entirely unprompted by the audience, he spoke for a while about how NCLB is bad law and ought to be repealed, and criticised those who think it can be fixed.

His position on NCLB is very clearly "opposed".

*blink* they also list Richardson as "unknown" on whether he supports the Iraq war, and "phased withdrawal" (rather than "supports") on Iraq withdrawal. That's some bad research. You only have to listen to any one of his stump speeches or any of the debates to know Richardson thinks we should get ALL US troops out of Iraq within 6 months. If that's "phased" then Kucinich & Gravel favor "phased" too.
