Fantastic picture! I wonder if F4's are still in active service? It'd be interestic to know if they outlasted the F-14 in active service.

js...The USAF still uses the F-4 (designated QF-4) in target squadrons. The US Navy has discontinued is QF-4 target program but uses USAF aircraft. The Air Force has painted a few of their QF-4s in camoflage schemes from the past (like the one in this picture). I'd like to see at least one painted in a historic Navy scheme for use in Legacy flights.

Yeah. I had the same one, actually. It didn't fare too well under my childhood form of AA fire.

I worked on F-4Js while in the Navy in the early 70s. The Phantoms were icons and beautiful, rugged airplanes. Over 5000 were built from 1958 to 1981. From 1959 to 1962 they set 15 world records, 5 of them speed records which werent broken until 1975. I can still hear their powerful GE turbojet engines. Great pic with the mountain range in the background. Thanks for the memories.

It is a great picture of the F-4. I was stationed in Davis-Monthon for a year while in the Air Force. During the Vietnam war I loaded a variety of weapons on the F-4. It was one of my favorite planes.

beautiful shot Ken. What is the 'Q' desig. for? Is this phantom's nose gun still mounted? what is protruding ahead of the rudder? the tubelike thing on the left wing? Is there a squadron or a wing of these at DMAFB? Great to see this aircraft again.

Max, the "Q" stands for drone aircraft; unfortunately this aircraft is a target drone. On the other hand, it IS on the airshow circuit so can still be see in flying condition.

Awesome shot!

Do you know what day of the week they do the test flights on? I'd love to get shots of an F-4 flying before they're all AMRAAM-bait.

Joe...this was taken at the Heritage Flight Conference at D-M were they practice Heritage Flights before the airshow season. I doubt it's stationed there.

I've seen it in the heritage flight at the Andrews air show. They say it's stationed at Eglin, which I think is where all the QF-4's are. For something that's designated to end its career by being blown to pieces, it sure looks like it's well taken care of.

I understand that a few of the QF-4s are painted in historic color schemes specifically for airshows. Whether or not they have target duty I don't know...

I grew up near the flight path of McClellan AFB, where some of these were serviced. I recall that they had a very distinctive sound, a sort of howl. A very tough-looking plane.
