The Joy of Motherhood

The child here really doesn't look very well, but I keep coming back to this one because of the mother's expression. She looks absolutely radiant, so beautiful and so very happy. Another from the village near Rangpur.

I am indebted to Poezemarieke (see comment below) for pointing out that the child's eyes have been coloured black...basically to ward off evil spirits.

The title would work perfectly - if the child looked a lot more healthy. This gives me an awkward feeling when I look a this work. HAving said that, it's not often that a picture can make me feel so strongly, so for that reason, it has to be a 10. (FOr what it's worth, that's the only 10 I've ever given)

Thanks to all for your comments/ratings so far. Trav and Mark, I share the discomfort this image makes you feel, it has the same effect on me...but I like that it does make me feel such mixed emotions. The village where I took this was a source of unbelievable portraits. It is my intention to print up the best as A4 prints and send them out to the local Bangladeshi tour agency we used, and ask them to distribute them to the villagers. I'd really like to give something back to them...and I'm very sure that I will return to Bangladesh again. (Mark...your 10 vote is especially appreciated. Many thanks.)

Note that this baby's eyes are coloured black, which makes the baby looks like being sick. Is for keeping ghost away from children and safe there life. Bangladeshi people told me this.

Great portrait! Interesting, the comments - a less good portrait because the baby is not the "bursting with health" version? What strikes me is the glowing eyes, happiness of the mother although she herself has signs of malnourishment .. their state of health by no means takes away from the fact that this is a superb portrait of mother & child, not wealthy, not healthy, but she's bursting with pride. And the kohl does accentuate the lethargy of the baby, adding a sense of sadness
