It's better when viewed large and black

Ahh, the stuff that happens when it's -30 Celsius outdoors and nobody can even think of playing hockey or going for a walk.
I set up this really complicated and precise studio setup trying to achieve a look i had in my mind.
To test my lighting setups i take self portraits, i did that for half an hour till i had all the kinks worked out and the setup was perfect. I had to make it look like there were two lights when i really had only one.
Slowly i got all my siblings, mom and dad to sit on a stool as i took individual portraits. They were all...skeptical and didn't really care for the 'look' of the image. And besides, profile photos are at best...unflattering.
After the shots were all taken i set out to layer them in photoshop by removing the black part in front of their faces and layering them together. That was surprisingly little work, the biggest challenge was to work with jpeg images, i had forgotten to switch to raw mode when shooting so my exposure latitude was really limited.
I polished it up and there you have it, a beautiful family portrait with my sister Denise missing.
I like it because it's the only family photo that has ever turned out. And now, for once in my life i see what people mean when they say we look alike.!!! It seems that when taking family photos i cannot be behind the camera and in front of it simultaneously.
Strobist info: Flash on reflector umbrella, that was mostly covered and allowed only a vertical strip of light [to the front left of face, large black light blocking device directly in front of face, and reflector to the front right side of the face.
