defeat by katiew.
one of the funniest ideas for a shoot i've had yet (ideas don't come often, so this was a rarity!) i had a few hours free between "to-do's", so bryce & i figured out what to write on all the post-its, taped them all up, then i shot! (.... ok, actually this is a RESHOOT after the original... needed a fish-eye lens to really get the job done.)

model:: bryce, of course. my favorite cowboy / little brother / willing model!

for my fellow iadt shooters.... both paul & pierre & giles agreed on this shot... i swear i heard a rip in the space-time continuum, i saw the flying pigs and i felt hell freezing over. lol :)

canon 5d, 15mm fisheye, mixed lighting (strobe & the almighty flourescent).
fisheye lens meant i was actually about 1 foot from his face when i shot this! i kept getting my legs in frame, the light heads & random people walking by... funny!

(Added to the Cream of the Crop pool as my personal favorite.

I Adore this. Obviously, it's very funny but it's also clever and sharp and well-executed. I love that he's asleep with his thumb in his mouth like a baby, I love the composition and colors, I LOVE all the things written on the notes (especially "Skip AA meeting", "Pay off comic book loan", "Reorder Prozac", "Bagpipe lesson"...). This is special.

brain map :: thanks for your insightful comment! the thumb-in-the-mouth was definitely deliberate... making him feel so defeated by his job that he's reverted to a completely infantile state - curled up fetal & all. this is actually a RESHOOT of my original concept... i wanted the composition & angle to work just right. .... and yeah, the "skip AA meeting" was one of my absolute favorites! it was loads of fun concocting a personality for him based on what he'd make notes about :)

Different group, same opinion. Best photo I've seen all day. I'm very into concepts (from your photostream, it seems that you are as well) and this one is just so perfectly executed it kills me. Every detail is just right. Pardon the pun, but this image will "stick" with me.

And thanks for the thoughtful reply. :)

oh, and i left these notes up in the empty cube for 2 days... just for the reaction of everyone who walked in our office... i highly recommend doing this in ANY office! so entertaining... people kept giving me ideas of new posties to add. an instructor, james, gave me the idea to put the "42?" note up repeatedly.. just to make people wonder "what in the world is THAT for!?"

tshane :: i thought about putting something funny on the computer screen, but anything other than post-it notes was too distracting. i wanted the post-it notes and the guy to be the ONLY real elements. but thanks for the suggestion... it's definitely something i thought about when i was setting up the shot! :-)

WOW that comosition is marvelous! Such an illustration, no I mean monument of our time, our era, our lifestyle. A true time document. When (if) the archeologists find something from our age I really hope it will be this photo.

Though I don't like your "shot:"-lines in the text. The viewer shoudn't know anything about that. This photo has nothing to do with technicalities such as fisheye or 5d. It's all about pure composition. And I partly disagree with Aquilant; I'd say that the yellow has nothing to do with the the qualities of this photo, the colour is irrelevant. It would have been as good if it was taken with a compact camera with mad white balance settings.

Have you had any exhibition in Europe yet? Tell me when it happens! I was at the Hasselblad center last Thurday watchng this year's Hasselblad prize winner, the South African photographer David Goldblatt. He is great but you outclass him! Perhaps I could give in a suggestion about next years distinction...

I've uesd the words before and I gonna recycle them: You're simply unsurpassable!

andreasnilsson1976 :: wow, thank you SO much for your kind comments. i've definitely been working on "photo illustrations" and "concept photography". i'm pleased that you always give me such thorough feedback... it means a lot to me!

as for the "shot details" i listed... i have done that for a lot of my posted images, mostly because i'm in school for photography... my fellow students & i like reading these details about the "HOW" to help us in our own work. i love finding other photographers willing to share ideas about their technique & approach, so i try to do the same.

i will DEFINITELY disagree with you on the yellow issue! that was more deliberate than anything else in the shot. not only are the post-it notes yellow, but i wanted to over-emphasize that sickly flourescent feeling of being in some horrible office. color temperature is something i'm verrrrry picky about, if this was shot on "auto white balance", you'd never see me sign my name to it. (BUT... i'm glad you see something in this image apart from the color & think it could stand alone without it... that definitely makes me feel good about the story & composition!!)

and man, lastly... i'm not even on the same PLANET as David Goldblatt.... yes, i'm familiar with his work (and hate you a little bit for being able to go to the hasselblad foundation award!!! lucky duck!!!!) ha ha! :) but yes, goldblatt's style is markedly different than mine. but social commentary photojournalism - especially in his reserved, unassuming kind of visual style - is a completely different art form than mine. i'm not even worthy of being mentioned in the same paragraph as him!!!! .... and no, no showings in europe yet... workin on it! but not yet :-) still a novice professional.... gotta get the business on it's feet before working on a fine-art / gallery angle!

thanks for ALL of your support & comments :) i hope i don't sound too... defensive (?) or something... i just like a good debate & like discussing my work :) have a nice day!!!
