exploring a hospital! sort of

exploring a hospital! sort of by katherine of chicago.
That's still in use...while I wait for them to finish up my case...after spending 8 hours today getting treatment for a stupid accident that happened yesterday in Detroit. (If you guessed it involved a fall in an abandoned building, you're right. At least it was on the first floor stairwell, not anywhere on the 13th or 14th floors.) When I was far from home, And by myself. And my cell phone wasn't working (actually, I could have restarted it but I honestly thought it wasn't working). And I had a day of walking around planned. Which I did, because I could still walk...at first. And I had a concert to go to. Which I stood during, because unlike the band's show in Chicago, I could take photos, and did. Then around midnight I realized I could barely stand up, took a cab to Greyhound, had to be carried onto the bus, had to have the bus driver back in Chicago help with a cab, and then...the 8 hours at Stroger, feeling gross and sleep-deprived from the previous day.

Anyhoo, it's not broken, just badly sprained. This is the first injury I've ever had like this--in fact, I haven't had to go to the hospital since an accident when I was a baby. I'd already cut my big Detroit trip short because of finances, but had a lot I was looking forward to in Chicagoland this weekend. Given that it took 10 minutes for me to crawl up to my 3rd-floor walkup this afternoon, I don't have high hopes for much of that happening, unless anyone feels like driving somewhere!

Speaking from experience, hopping on one leg up to a 3rd floor apartment is not fun, but it does get easier. Good thing nothing is broken. Heal quickly, and I expect/look forward to an e-mail with all of the gory details.

Thanks!
I changed the caption to include what happened. I feel embarrassed to admit it, but at least people will know I didn't get hit by a car or attacked or anything. I should have known an abandoned building would get me someday!

I turned my ankle pretty bad back in May (somewhere between just twisting and a full on sprain). I found a cane was very useful for getting around, and also helped it heal faster. Plus you can use it to tell young punks to get off your lawn.

I think Katherine is none to familiar with the perils than can come with urbex! (You were apparently long overdue for a non-urbex hospital visit anyway!)

So, since no one else asked... what concert?? :-)

umm..Carol...so did the kid that fell to his death. his friend with him was a contact of mine (not flickr). detroit alone, bunk phone, not near home....seems a tad risky thats all. even as an interior architectural grad. familiar isn't always safe. in the end it could have been any of us...but at least be safe thats all I wish...

Thanks for the comments, everyone who's responded or may still respond! Oddly, I haven't heard from a couple Chicago friends I told about this, but the Greyhound bus driver who helped out has called me 3 times!

Ran errands today with the crutches and it wasn't too bad, then came home and was organizing my apartment all day, putting a bit of weight on the hurt leg because it didn't hurt THAT much. It's 11 pm and I'm just now getting around to relaxing and elevating my leg. I haven't yet figured out what my insurance situation will be...

C-M, I heard that awful story from another explorer. Yes, this was risky, but it was more a case of simple carelessness (not using my flashlight enough and forgetting how the stairs were set up on the way back down) than actually walking on a dubious-looking floor or fire escape. But it won't keep me away from Detroit...The shots I got inside/on top of this building will be in a set called "Detroit Building of Doom."

It was a Ladytron concert, and I'll post photos. I wouldn't have stood that long to get shots (and they still allow smoking at concerts there, too) if the Chicago show the night before had allowed them (but they made me check my camera for $3).

I've been behind in viewing so I didn't find out about this until today... I'm very glad you didn't hurt yourself a lot worse, which it sounds like you easily could have... Hope you feel better soon!

Sounds like you didn't make the left turn at the bottom of the stairs? Must have been fun getting out of that building

Wow, thank you! And this happened as I was listening to the show, or some of it anyway. Yes, I'm pretty much recovered by now...but I still don't know what the bill will be.
Thanks to the last few commenters, as well!
