this guy was such a sweetie- he said googlemaps was looking for a signal.

as for the wifi signal, the drivers need to upload their scanned data to the mothership once the harddrives are full or at certain intervals...

but in NYC it shouldn;t be hard to find an open wifi access point, or google should have accounts with att or tmobile for their paid wifi...;-)

Check this address in Google Maps: 52, Calle de Madrid, Getafe, Madrid, Spain. It's a pedestrian street. Maybe Google has received special permission to use a car, but maybe they used a tricycle?

but in some cities they get special permits to scan with the regular googlenetta. sometimes the cities even make special requests;)

i love the video of the tricycle in japan, being pushed thru difficult terrain by 3 google employees, i think it's a temple with adjacent park;)

"Since we launched Street View in UK we've received many suggestions for new locations and landmarks that people in UK would like to see added. We're working hard to bring Street View to new places but some important tourist spots, like castles or piers, cannot be reached by car. That's why we've created the Google Trike; a mechanical masterpiece comprising 3 bicycle wheels, a mounted Street View camera and a very athletic cyclist in customised Google apparel.

Later in the summer (fingers crossed for sunshine), the Google Trike will be coming to Britain to make some special image collections. Google is asking you to send us your most inspired suggestions for the places the trike should visit in Britain.

To help get your ideas flowing, Google has teamed up with VisitBritain, with their unrivaled knowledge of Britain's tourist treasures, to devise 5 categories under which people can submit their ideas. The categories are: Castles, Coastal paths, Natural Wonders, Historic Buildings & Monuments and (Sports) Stadiums.

We will be accepting suggestions for a limited time and we'll then work with VisitBritain to choose the most original ideas from each category. The public will then be able to cast their final votes and choose the top 3 locations we'll try to add to Street View (pending sunny weather).

As we only collect images from public roads we'll work closely with the relevant organizations to collect images of privately-owned locations."

The Googlenetta tricycle would need to be pushed and not driven during those hours! Or Google just asks and gets an exemption, which they will get for the car as well, not in all, but in most cities... but for PR it's much better to use the tricycle...! People will have much less fear of SV when they see the tricycle;)
