Savings

Savings by The tamed shrew.
Assignment: PCA18– Disappearing from our world
Deadline: Mar. 2, 2008
Image Tag: pca18
From: R_Bell

Mission:
This is a 2 week assignment and one that probably requires an explanation. Since we all come from different parts of the world, what I'd like to see is captures of something that is disappearing, or at risk of diappearing. This can be a building that holds some historic value thats going to be torn down, endangered species, an eco-system or whatever you can come up with. Then in the WIT: add a small blurb about your subject and why it's at risk of being lost forever. Hopefully we will all produce an image that will stir some emotions and raise some awareness.
Good Luck!

WIT
First of all I had the greatest difficulty with the subject, as I couldn't get away from abstracts, such as 'conversation face to face' or 'time' or simply 'trust' - so I have come up with this since trust and the banking system - and hard cash or savings seems to be becoming a thing of the past. Credit, large unsecured loans, fraud and greed have made me come to the conclusion that trust in financial institutions is a thing of the past.
As to the environment? My own opinion is that we humans may damage the environment, but it will have the last laugh! I reckon we will disappear before it does. I am surrounded by areas which were built on - now derelict - and the land soon takes over. The seas are nibbling at my Island coastline, but that's slightly difficult to photograph and represent! However, in other areas of the world, land is being reborn, so win some, lose some as we say.

This is one of my Money savings pigs! It has cash in it just like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! (My Italian food is flavoured with the Basil in the pot on the right.) Perhaps that's an art that's being lost some places (cooking) - but not in most 'civilized' places in the world.
So, I guess I am saying that what's being lost (in the western world at least) is confidence in the banking system - and the confidence and desire to save for a rainy day!
Straight pic of the piggybank on my windowsill and a rainbow graduated filter.

Thank you Mags - mmm, basil, my favourite herb. Working on the Finance side myself, I must admit to becoming a bit disillusioned. :(

Love the rainbow color effect and overall composition. You do so well with glass. When I first saw it and read the assignment, I thought it was about the decrease in savings by individuals. Guess my perception was influenced by my own experience. The rainbow effect is a nice indicator of a fading of values or losing touch with the present.

Almost like an editorial cartoon. Very good idea. Colors are interesting.

I would be inclined to agree with you in that respect for and confidence in banks and the banking system is on the decline and deservedly so. Try this theory on for size: When the "big one" happens in CA and between 500,000 and 1 million uninsured homes ares destroyed and all those people walk away from their mortgages, the present crisis will look like a walk in the park. Most banks will fail and the Federal Reserve could too.

Anyway, enough digression. Excellent image. Superb interpretation. I'm not sure that see the relationship between basil/cooking and banking industry confidence unless it is enjoy while you can, but that's a minor and irrelevant quibble.

I too had trouble thinking of this assignment in terms of tangible subjects. I love what you've come up with. Agree, savings are becoming an endangered species. To confidence and desire to save for a rainy day I would add "ability." Given, with a "role model" such as our administration, which is willing to pass its debt on to our children, it's hard for people to adopt a savings mentality, but there are also those who would love to save but can't because they have trouble making ends meet and/or their employer doesn't provide benefits. Sorry, I'm totally digressing here, too. I lost you on the basil. What a fun photo. I think the pig's feet could use some extra room. Nice color treatment.

I haven't been in the group that long but knew you would come up with a creative interpretation. :-) The rainbow filter is great for the glass pig. I noticed a lot of scratches on the pig, which I think adds another dimension to the photo ... even those who save still shake the bank to get their money out. Also like the potted plant compositionally but also for how the leaves pick up the rainbow colors. Nicely done!

I like the colours and the spots in the background...raining was it :)
Mine has several interpretations as well, so I don't mind the basil. The light on the leaves is lovely.
You do better saving your pennies than we do...our kids help themselves to our spare change!

very funky image, after reading your WIT i the rainbow and saving for a rainy day really stand out, technically great as usual.

This would make an excellent kiddies saving poster for any of the high street banks :-)

I like the effect a lot. Great job. The rainbow on the clear pig is perfect. I can also picture this being used as a hip bank advertisement.

Wow you know, i really have critique for this. I think its just great. A very cool idea for the assignment, and your choice of PP is outstanding.

I particularly like how only the word "bank" appears on the pig in full. Very eye catching...and very cool. Id hang it.

Nice shot. The DoF is spot on and the rainbow filter you used makes the shot, without it I don't think I would like it. The pig seems to be in such sharp focus, very nice.

Fun image. Great colors. The exposure is good and focus is clear. Composition is ok but I would like to see it without the plant on the right.

I love the colors and smiling pig. Its all so happy for whats suppose to be a depressing theme though. But thats just the temporary context, I really like creativity and can tell you had fun with the shot, and I agree that it could be in an ad campaign.

So very true.
I love how you used a simple piggy bank to demonstrate this.
The colors you created are great too.
We all had piggy banks as kids but I dont see them at all these days.
We cant trust the big pigs. There is fraud everywhere..insider trading etc Kids also need to learn to save.
Great.
Im thinking what it would look like if you put this image adjacent to a Fidelity or another big financial institution :)
Great job.

I agree wholeheartedly, everyday we either get emails, post or phonecalls from people who are determined to throw vast amounts of money at us, how many people are so desperate that they get in over their necks with a little push by these bleeps! I wish I had half your imagination or creativity K8, this is a really cool message, it also puts me in mind of kids no longer being asked to help out around the house in order to earn their pocket money, it has now become a given that they stick out their hands and get for nothing, not my kids, they want, they earn!

Another great, original, interpretation of the theme.

I love the colors and the objects in this picture. Well done.

I suppose there are nits to pick with the crop - you chose to cut off a piece on the left and leave a piece on the right that both beg to be more in or more out of the picture.

[without reading the others]

I agree with you! The letters on the side of the piggy "bank" adds a bit more understanding to the submission. I'm curious as to why you cut off the rear of the piggy and included the right side plant or pot. It seems out of context to me.

The colors of the rainbow are appropriate here since we all would love to believe in a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, and that there really is an end to a rainbow!

Technically the work is right on. The focus is great! the exposure is perfect! You nailed the assignment!

I had never seen a filter like this! It's an interesting effect, but I'm not sure how it relates to the theme you are going for. Technically, the shot looks good. Compositionally, I might consider going a little wider to get a little more room around the pig. He looks like he's bursting out of the frame.

I saw the picture and thought about it as "My savings are disappearing from the the world" and to be very honest I related to it 100%!! Then I thought "Piggy Banks are disappearing from the world", which I think is also true (as a matter of fact we got my kid one 3 weeks ago, but it's not as common as before).

After reading your WIT I understand where you wanted to go and even though I see now the clear link, it was not so clear to be from the beginning.

The toning of the image is really interesting, the colors are very good, the edit is well done, the lighting is good (even if a tad hot on the top, but it gives you the idea of the shape), the only comment I have is that I would have liked to see the full pig and less Basil (even if I love it for cooking too).
