Description: Nearly identical to Black-chinned Hummingbird; averages shorter billed, longer tailed. Female averages more brightly colored; best distinguished by primary shape, but some individuals are intermediate.
Holds tail fairly still when hovering.
Black-chinned and Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are very similar in all plumages. Males are distinguished by throat color, but identification of females requires very close study, and even then some are unidentifiable.
Voice: Call soft and husky like Black-chinned Hummingbird but may average slightly sharper and higher. Chase call sharp, sputtering zeeek ididididid like Black-chinned, often repeated. Song from perch faint, high rattling t t t t. Adult male's wings produce very faint, high buzz in flight.
