The Guard Bunny Defending His Turf by karstography

The Guard Bunny Defending His Turf

I found myself at the university today with my camera and stack of books. While departing in the evening light, I decided to use the good ol' russian fisheye lens to snap some totem pole photos, but I was distracted by the prolific presence of the dominant species on campus. This little creature was particularly photogenic... either that or he thought my lens was some newfangled tasty food!

This is my favourite bunny photo thusfar.

JOIDES Resolution by karstography

JOIDES Resolution

The JOIDES Resolution (Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling) is currently moored in Victoria for a few days to restock on supplies and scientists.

I was surpised to see it in the harbour while cycling by tonight. For a geology geek like myself, this is far cooler than the time I stumbled upon a submarine on a cargo ship.

According to the JR website:

"The JR is a floating scientific research center with more than 12,000 square feet of space (about a quarter of the size of a football field) for scientific laboratories and equipment. The JR's laboratories contain facilities for studies in sedimentology, paleontology, geochemistry, geophysics , petrology, paleomagnetism, physical properties, and downhole measurements. Computer systems, publications, and photographic facilities lend critical technical support, and a marine geophysics laboratory produces digital, single-channel seismic reflection profiles while the ship is under way."

AND!

"The JR’s Dynamic Positioning System (DP), supported by 12 powerful thrusters and 2 propellers, uses computers to maintain the ship over a specific location while drilling in waters as deep as 8,200 meters (5 miles, 27,000 feet)."

awesomeness.
