This grand Arts and Crafts mansion was commissioned by Nellie Holmes-Shannon, who was related to poet Oliver Wendel Holmes, and her husband Michael Shannon, one of the first Los Angeles Police Department officers and well-known "traffic cop" who pulled horseback transgressors off the oad with a hook. Shannon worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for two decades and participated in the driving of the golde spike at Prommontory, Utah. B 1889 Shannon concluded he had "done enough railroading to last me for the balance of my days, so I applied for a job on the Los Angeles police force." The Shannons hired the architecture partnership of Train and Williams to design an imposing Tudor and Art Nuveau-influenced residence, with bueatifully detailed mahogany woodwork, and remarkable stained glass windows throughout. Robert Farquhar Train and Robert Edmund Williams also designed some of Southern California notable buildings, including the First Congregational Church, the Pasadena Ostrich Farm, and the landmark Judson Studios in Highlad Park.

The Holmes-Shannon House is a Craftsman-style home built in 1911 in the Victoria Park section of the Mid City neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Designed by Robert Farquhar Train and Robert Edmund Williams, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in March 2008 based on its well-preserved Craftsman architecture.
