Call Di Lifesaver |
The Kambia Appeal is a UK medical
charity that has been working
exclusively in Kambia District in Sierra
Leone since 1992.
Sierra Leone is rated by the United
Nations as one of the poorest countries
in the world, with the highest maternal
mortality rate in Africa. Health
services in particular are severely
depleted, with chronic staff shortages
and inadequate facilities. Such
circumstances hit the poorest members of
society the hardest, and Kambia, a rural
district in the north of the country, is
one of the poorest regions.
In late 2007, The Kambia Appeal donated
six motorbike ambulances to two health
centres near Kambia Town allowing
villagers access to emergency care and
enabling nurses to refer patients to the
hospital.
In December 2007, Clare Reddington,
Greg Browning, James Dowling and Toby
Smith visited Kambia to work on 'Call Di
Lifesaver!' a 30 minute film in Krio,
made up of three stories centred around
the ambulances. Working with local
people as actors and producers, the film
will be used by clinic staff to
sensitise local communities to use and
trust the ambulances.
