Man's Struggle

Man's Struggle

A pencil and watercolor, then photoshopped illustration of a beautiful woman. The quoted text is an excerpt from Alexander Pope's "Essay on Man" (written in the early 1700's). It beautifully captures the constant struggle we face between being "darkly wise and rudely great" and between having "too much knowledge for the skeptic side/ With too much weakness for the stoic's pride."

Sorrow

Sorrow

An pencil/graphite wash illustration of a hidden, yet beautiful woman. Design marks surround her, as if planning her face, her emotions. The quote is from a John Keats poem and speaks to how beautiful sadness can sometimes be and how sad we can find beautiful objects. The art compliments this idea of mixing chaotic water colors and textures with clean, circular design elements.

Shame

Shame

A mixed media (charcoal, photo transfer, watercolor, photoshop and illustrations) piece addressing some of the unfair pressure women feel. Shame. Pressure to feel pretty, yet abused when they try too hard or don't try hard enough. Pressure mostly leveled by men, but sometimes other women, too. Also a piece about the natural beauty of women - but by hiding her face - is it only the beauty of women's bodies? That's up to you.
