a particularly good Shinkansen photo...way above the average.
tesis_100 (74 months ago | reply)
Very nice picture. It looks like there are buses in the backround making it seem like an even longer panning shot than it actually was.
Nice, Tesis_100

@scleroplex: sorry - there always was a bigger version but I accidentally switched off the 'all sizes' feature - now it should be available in full glory again

You've really captured the essence of what the Shinkansen is all about. The first time I tried to photograph one, I did the obvious thing and tried to turn the train into a blur, rather than the surroundings. The fact that there are no Shinkansen shots in my photostream shows how successful I was. What really makes this work is that the blur is divided into strips, which give the picture some necessary form.

Wow!!! Great capture.

This is amazing. How fast did you shoot this one?
I found this photo because you asked me to Explore My Photostream
Kaidohmaru* (74 months ago | reply)
Thanks Ricardo, this was shot at a 1/20. For some shots I used a mono-pod and some were hand-held. I don't remember which shot what done held-held - the sharpness differences were quite minor in the end.

Great shot, a real impression of speed comveyed here!

Thanks for the flowers. @Lump Of Hesitation: Good to hear that you like this stripe pattern produced by the busses in the background. That was actually the reason for me to favor this one over my other shots.

.. and here is the rear end of a Series 700 Shinkansen shot by Navinda and post-processed excellently:

Technical: 7-10 - Nice overall sharpness. Post processing is well done but evident.
Composition: 7/10 - Might be a bit better if the train we a bit lower in the frame. I also miss seeing the track.
Eye Appeal: 8/10 - Many people will enjoy the blur effect and the train is a beauty.
Commercial Viability: 7/10 - possible wall print or advertising since all emphasis is on the perceived speed of the train through the blurring...

Technical: 7
Very sharp, good exposure.
Composition: 7
I miss the track as well, and there is something in the foreground that is a bit distracting; especially the vertical thing in the middle. The photo is quite centered.
Eye Appeal: 7
Appealing because of the blur effect, but as said above some parts are distracting at the same time.
Commercial Viability: 6
Not sure, although it is a nice photo (no text on the train, so not for marketing)

Technical: 9
Not easy getting a good panshot but this works and is well focussed on the subject
Composition: 9
Again well done the blurrness and the focussed center / train
Eye Appeal: 9
Istant appeal..fast moving.
Commercial Viability: 7
For the F1 crowed / sports lovers
Grade 8 /10 as seen in The Portfolio: Pro Invitation

Just today as I was driving along the highway next to a train I was trying to get a shot like this. I failed. Of course, I was driving about 75 miles and hour on a two lane highway and attempting to use my telephoto. Its no wonder I failed. Heck, I'm lucky to be alive. Anyway, brilliant shot.

I wish there were more than 10 shots for me to "explore," but these ten are all pretty great. Excellent capture of movement here - it looks like this train is moving at a very high speed. Well done.

Exceptional shot. Wonderful job on the panning, and it can't have been easy with a bullet train! I'm jealous...

Yes, that is a difficult shot. Perfect tho, great job. I've heard the train system is superb in Japan. Is this true?
Kaidohmaru* (70 months ago | reply)
Thanks Trevor - if you ask me the Japan Rail network is without any even close competitors worldwide. Frequency, speed, and reliability are all at their technical limits in urban areas. Plus the Shinkansen network supplies fast links country wide all the way down to Fukuoka on Kyushu. Supplemented by hundreds of private lines filling in the gaps.
Cogger (70 months ago | reply)
Thats going a bit fast!
There's now a group dedicated to good pictures of fast, noisy, dramatic trains, and nothing else, and we'd love to have your picture in the pool at pan that train!!
