      A very creative idea. The red of the leaf is complimentary to the green (Algae) in the rings of the stump. The mostly straight sharp lines of the leaf are in contrast with the circular annual rings.
      I feel a little cheated that I cannot see the entire leaf.

      Do you know what species this is?

      It's a sweet gum leaf. And actually the "stump" is a weird concrete paver made to look like wood that previous owners left in the yard. This was just a quick shot I took in my yard...still surprised it has shown up on so many websites.
