Anhinga Landing - Everglades National Park
I have been spending so much time with birds lately I thought I'd let one of them wish all my flickr friends a Happy New Year. This male Anhinga was happy to oblige!
This was taken on the Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park. Talk about an aptly named trail! Although the Vulture Trail would make sense too as they follow you along, hoping the heat will cause you too faint, and then… I'm going to stop there. Talk about tame birds.
I got to meet Alfred and Fabiola Forns of www.avianscapes.com while shooting this spot. Alfred talked my ear off, he has an incredible wealth of information and Fabiola was watching the trees ahead of us intensely, calling out each action by the Anhinga. It was a fun and educational morning for sure!

Dillon Falls - Deschutes River, Oregon
I wanted to break up my Florida images with a photo from my current trip. I have been in the Klamath Basin for a couple of days. Everything's frozen out here and the raptors have come out to play. It's wonderful to see so many Bald Eagles. On the way down I stopped in Bend for a day. After snowshoeing near Mt. Bachelor, I came down to the lower elevations where I found more interesting subjects to shoot. This was taken along the Deschutes River. Bald Eagle images will be coming soon!

Green Heron - Little Estero Lagoon, Florida
Next up from Florida we have the Green Heron! This was tops on my list of birds I wanted to photograph and this little guy was more than cooperative. I waded out into the muck of Little Estero Lagoon and shot away. What a beautiful bird!
Happy Holidays to everyone! I'll be packing tomorrow for a trip to Southern Oregon. I'm just starting to dig into my Florida images and I already have another photo trip in two days. Life is good!

Great Egret - Sanibel Island, Florida
Back from Chicago, it's time for another post from my Florida trip!
For my first bird image I decided to go with the Great Egret, the bird of South Florida. It is amazing how common it is to see such a beautiful bird. This was taken on Sanibel Island at Blind Pass. The fisherman lineup alongside the Egrets to fish on the shore.
I didn't crop the image at all. I was amazed how often in Florida you can get the birds to truly fill the frame.
A special thanks to my partner Chris! She is a fantastic wildlife spotter and driver and without her help, many of my images would not have been possible!
Happy Holidays!

Palmettos & Pines - Everglades National Park
I'm back from my Florida trip! It was a true bird photographer's paradise. I started my adventure at the Venice Rookery, made my way down to Little Estero Lagoon and Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge, and then finished in the Everglades. I ran into Judd Patterson my first night shooting landscapes in the Everglades, had a chance to meet Alfred and Fabiola Forns while shooting birds on the Anhinga Trail, and had the great pleasure of shooting one evening with Paul Marcellini.
To all my landscape photographer friends, I am still and will always be a landscape photographer so even though there will be a LOT of birds shots coming your way, my landscape passion isn't going anywhere. This was a more wildlife centric trip. I love shooting both!
I'm back for less than 24 hours, as I'm off to Chicago for a family Christmas trip. I'm trying frantically to catch up on all my contacts' streams! I should have more time next week.
With my first image I chose my favorite landscape of the trip. This was taken on an outing with Paul Marcellini - www.flickr.com/photos/paulmarcellini/. If he's not already a contact of yours, he should be! Check out his work when you get a chance!
I think the Everglades provides many opportunities to capture unique landscapes. I find the palmettos and pines to be an interesting combination and Paul lead me to a perfect location for capturing such an image. And for running into a rattlesnake:) We got skunked for clouds, but fortunately the Everglades likes to give you a pink & blue glow during the latter stages of sunset.
Happy Holidays!
