The Local Buca

The Local Buca

The Buca di Beppo in downtown San Diego. I really like neon lights, I need to start seeking it out, I especially like dated looking neon in desert locations. This doesn't quite meet those requirements, but it's a start. The new cars land at Disney's California Adventure should be nice too.

Somewhere over California

Somewhere over California

During the flight back from Vegas a few weeks ago I tried taking some shots out the window. With the fisheye I wasn't able to get quite what I wanted. I couldn't angle the shot far enough down to fill the frame with the ground, which I found a lot more interesting than the sky. A few moments later, we started our descent and the plane banked to the right and I was able to get this shot.

USS Midway Tactical Control

USS Midway Tactical Control

Yesterday I took my first trip since owning a DSLR to the USS Midway. The ship is now a museum in the San Diego Bay, but was most recently active in the early 90s during Operation Desert Storm. This is a shot of a desk at the back of the tactical control room where the critical strategic decisions were made.

It was pretty challenging getting a bracket off without people walking through, the lighting is pretty limited in the interior of the ship, and I didn't have a tripod. The ship does have some really cool scenes through, and they are ideal for HDR. Next time I go I'll make sure it's not a holiday weekend.

This is a 3 exposure HDR tone mapped in Photomatix. I set my camera on a radar machine and pointed towards the desk at the back of the room, it was the only area in the room that I could get 20 seconds worth of exposure without someone walking through the shot.

The Next Great Land for Photography

The Next Great Land for Photography

I'm pretty excited for the construction to finish at California Adventure. Not only to enjoy the new attractions, but also for photography. The neon all over cars land should make for some great HDR shots.

Check out the details of Radiator Springs in the full resolution image here.

Crossing Harbor

Crossing Harbor

Connecting the waterfront to the East Village and Gaslamp District in downtown San Diego.

This is a 6 exposure HDR created with two outputs from Photomatix blended together, one output tone mapped and the other output from exposure fusion.
