No, not the mug on the screen silly...

Well, it was good bye to the 17" MacBook Pro (replaced with the 24" iMac). Sold the 17" on eBay and got myself this 'plain' MacBook for traveling. Not a bad little thing, but I do have an issue (which apparently its prevalent with Apple laptops, although I never had it with the Pro) - it will not wake from sleep. It is quite annoying in humans too, but at least they don't need a hard reset.

    Forgive the rudimentary collage.
Note, however, that the top two mugshots were captured using the laptop's built in webcam. Not too bad for an 1mm lens, me thinks.

The collage looks great, and I am jealous. The 24 inch Imac (I assume) makes me drool. :-) The 17 inch Macbook--you lucky guy :-)

George, a passion (or obsession as Kitty feels) is a passion. But let us be clear, I have sold the 17" Pro to fund this 13". Of course I could mention that I still have about three (rather old) Windows systems - but then, I do occasionally make some money with them as an IT consultant.

Welcome to the club, Géza! I think you made a good deal.

(Does your MacBook do anything when it's supposed to wake up? Showing the beachball, etc? Mine usually hangs up showing the cursor only on the blank screen...)

    Nice Photolab Geza.
Are you not able to switch off the sleep function ?
    Simple question but I'am simple.

& a search on the net reveals that countless owners of Apple laptops are suffering from this 'undocumented feature' and there does not seem to be a solution that works for everybody.

Pihe - I just get a blank screen and can't wake it up other than doing a 'hard' reset. The problem seems to be that after a while the OS goes into 'Deep Sleep' mode and occasionally (but quite often) gets stuck. There are suggestions that the presence of an USB peripheral ( in my case a WiFi dongle) has something to do with it.

Hans - A laptop without sleep functionality would very severely limit its usability when on battery power.

I hope Apple will fix this soon. I have discovered that my problem is related to travelling from one network to another (going home from work). When I disconnect from the network in my workplace without going to the apple menu and selecting my home network as the current location, it usually gets stuck when waking up next time at home. :o(

Arghhhh! The doorbell rang, so I closed the lid. Same damn thing, it just would not restart. What is even more puzzling is that for the 1st three days of using it it never happened. There were no OS X updates, but I did install Lightroom, CS3, Adobe Reader, and not much else. So am no wiser.

Not wishing to teach you how to suck eggs... but...

Have you cleaned up the Permissions? (Probably the most important thing you must do after each new update or new application installation. As soon as you start seeing the spinning Beach Ball, this normally indicates corrupted Permissions or insufficient RAM).

Have you got sufficient RAM to cope when Lightroom & CS3?

Never start up or close down with CDrom or DVD in the drive (unless you are doing a Time Machine or OS-X installation).

Never leave a USB or iPod connected on start up or close down.

If you know this already, I apologise in advance. It might be of use to someone else.

    Will - wise words indeed.

Permission, valid point - shall do.

2GB RAM should be sufficient, me thinks.

I did think of the DVD - I did have one in the drive. Removing it made no difference.

The USB peripheral is a mute point. As I only spend days here I can't really contract for my own Inet connection so I am 'lucky' to be able to 'borrow' from an unknown neighbour (who is silly enough to leave it unprotected). However, the connection, (as you would expect) is very poor and if I remove the WiFi dongle I have to reboot and mess for ever to get it back.

If the 'sleep' issue would happen only when I choose to do it, I could cope with it. But it seems to happen ad-hoc if I leave the laptop for a while.

One curious thing I did notice. Skype (latest build) crashes often. I never had this issue with my previous Macs.
Anyway, thanks and I will soldier on.

    Here is another solution: IMG_7231.JPG

Train a cat, to hit the Space Bar or Mouse Pad :o)

Will, I can always get Marlon (my 9 months old grandson) to do that :-)

BTW - it may be too soon but since last nights OS X update (and subsequent permissions repair - which did find issues with AirPort) the sleep problem has nor re-occurred (even with the USB stick attached).
