Strange Creatures

Nasty
I wonder if this pattern is a product of its growth or not. Also would be interesting to see the larva planktonic form for comparison.

Strange Creatures by jurvetson.
The little sea urchin on top is quite unusual. It was discovered by a research vessel near New Caledonia at a depth of 1000 ft.

Not sure what the nipples are for tho...

The thumbnail gave me the impression it showed an exotic confection of marzipan and frosting, or perhaps an intricate piece of sculpture, like a Fabrege egg.

Do you know the taxonomy of this sea urchin?

thanks y'all. Yes, it is a beautiful computation. Here's another one from HMB:

A Beautiful Computation

It seems that we like the emergent constructs, fractal and nested, that arise from iterative computations (e.g., evolution, organic growth...).

In other words, we appreciate the accumulated computational complexity produced by evolutionary dynamics (genetic and memetic).
