I just got an ant farm yesterday. These guys are hard workers. They already have a ton of interconnecting tunnels.

Robotgirl, be sure to save an extra 300 pennies if you can't supply your own ants:
www.antsalive.com -- Most of the material is written as though you have a traditional 2-D sand-filled antfarm, but with the NASA agar, you need not feed them, water them, or do much but watch.

This one looks so weird, as if the tunnel was floating in the air and could collapse. Hi ants!

jurvetson  Pro User  says:

Nell: the ants wiggle their antennae to say "Hi" and "Yo, wassup?"

Robotgirl: Sunburn is right. It's worth the $3 for the package of 25 harvester ants.

Steve, will you get one of these? Maybe the ants would like the company. I want them, maybe I'll buy them when I get my own office.

thanks, y'all.

Nell. You read my mind!! How can you not love a 3 eyed creature with 140 legs that breathes through its feet, likes carrots, and can survive 20 years without water?

I think I'll grow another batch this summer. The "seeds" have a long shelf life. =)

Great shot and all, but these ant farms are not recommended for keeping your ants in. They tend to mould and generally only lasts maybe 14 days or so befor the whole colony dies out. If you really wanna keep ants it's much more worthwhile to do it the proper way with arena and formicary.

If you cant house that, then do the ants a favour and don't get any. ;X

jurvetson  Pro User  says:

Thanks for caring, but the details are not true. I have had two of these farms for years now and there is no mold. The gel contains agents that retard microbial growth.

And the ants live way longer than 14 days, of course. Several months for the three sub-colonies I have had.

Bara Alex says:

Well, in that case I guess you should consider yourself lucky. Or you've unlocked some super-secret key to keeping ants in these giant food-silos.

Most sites that even sell these states that they don't recommend them for keeping ants for more than 14 days.

I personally wouldn't like to live in my food, though. ;)

But as stated befor, great shot. It has a spooky tone to it.
