Hung Up

Hung Up by jurvetson.
This is Vinod Khosla’s cell phone. He was talking with Bill Joy, when alas…

This was a source of much levity in our meeting.

Ring ring ring goes the telephone
The lights are on but there's no-one home

Let's see...a life-size poster, reduced to black-and-white, possibly half-toned, with adhesive backing...posted guerilla-style in bathrooms at airports and other public places...

Time to do some comparison shopping, methinks. :-)

Well, I've washed my digital camera, but in this case maybe there is a 5 second rule of survivability? The time is of course based on the cleanliness of the water and how long you think about it...

I put these skin-like egrips on my phone, now it feels more organic and doesn't slide out of my pocket as easily.

my flatmate once did the same, retrieved the handset several seconds later, and then took it apart and wrapped it in swaddling clothes, not unlike the good lord Jesus Christ in the nativity scene - with our lounge radiator acting as the mobile manger. the next morning : lo! verily it worked absolutely as normal.

full marks for such a pristine toilet :)

1: remove battery

3: cross fingers

This is a plunge I would hate to do but one has to do it. Indeed, what a clean toilet! Imagine...just imagine...the worst!

A trick you can use to get all the water out is to just put it in a cup of perflourocarbons, which are 1.8 X the density of water and totally inert. The water floats to the top, and you can fish out your purged electronics.

The only problem is getting the perflourocarbons, which may not be cost effective unless you use them for something else.

How about just using a cloth or part of towel in the cup? That would get the same results. Your idea is great and quite natural coming from a scientist. A person who deals with normal everyday household issues is used to thinking quickly and using what is readily available. I do retain the idea of absorbing the water from any electronic item that has had an unexpected dip. I will remember that. ;-)

Todd Huffman  Pro User  says:

The problem with using evaporation is small amounts of water can stick around. The idea behind the perflourocarbons is the liquid gets in to every nook and displaces the water and pushes out of the phone. Without using perflourocarbons what you suggest is the best you can do, and possibly adding a bit of heat. Just make sure you don't put it in the oven... otherwise this might happen... www.forensicts.co.uk/news/content/binary/melt ed-phone12.jpg

I live in Arizona, and if you do too, just sitting it outside for a while might do the trick.

Water and electronics don't mix because of the shorts in made by the electronics. So something that takes a swim may or may not be ruined, depending on what happened when it ended up in the toilet.

If you anticipate your electronics getting wet very often, you might want to use this Navy SEAL trick... www.instructables.com/id/EYADC0VF0DTUJUX/

Thank you so much for all that interesting information. I see the difference. Still, I neither have perflourocarbons, condoms or regular hot weather around me. I live near Montréal and we are finally having warm weather (very hot since two days) so the sun is hot only for a short part of the year. As a replacement for condoms, small plastic bags, my favourite being the baby bottle bags (no, I have no babies) are an ideal size though you cannot seal them with a knot. This is fun.

For the amount of times I've used one of your creative commons photos in a blog post, it's funny that I didn't put together WHO you were until I saw you on TED, and even then, it wasn't until talking with someone else in your community that it all spun together for me. Funny that, eh?
