Ecologies

Ecologies by jurvetson.
I was asked to give a little talk to an august group of my peeps on the future of Estonia. It was a bit daunting. So I used a framework from my daily work, comparing startup companies to startup economies… This is a frame grab from the video went online today.

Gotta pack. I’m heading down to some of my favorite places: SpaceX and then the Santa Fe Institute for a cool symposium on evolution… in the broad context. From Danny Hillis: “The greatest achievement of our technology may well be creation of tools that allow us to go beyond engineering – that allow us to create more than we can understand.” — a quote from my dead text blog, but one I still ponder. In the synthetic biology space, Genomatica has found that design for evolvability can trump intelligent design in maximizing chemical yield from genetically engineered microbes.

But the learning in evolutionary design is process learning – how to grow a solution, not how the microbe works. The intel inside is inscrutable.

Hope I can find some fine folks there to knock some sense into me.

Delivers quite a wallop in < 10 mins - well done. Specially taken by the concept of a rising iron curtain rendering everybody an immigrant in their own land - nicely put and very true - certainly for those who have not yet reached senior citizen stage and are rusted into the old culture.

But as to your pronunciation of the word "tumult" - must be Texas dialect... (tyoo-mult in my brand of English)

Gotta keep eyes open for the emergence of promising Estonian teens with higher vision. :-)

Although I am "proud" (more like appreciative and acknowledging) of my own Estonian heritage, my focus is no longer on nationalism (which is based on artificial borders that have more often been defined by war rather than a sense of mutual belongingness - the Peipsi border being a case in point) but on the different ways that each diverse cultural background (with all it's particular and unique strengths related to how they have learned to survive and thrive in a particular physical environment) can contribute towards the evolution of the whole. Of us all. The value of (the balance of) diversity and unity in collective evolution.

Just read up a bit on the basques (culture, politics, history, genetic history) - wow!!!! amazing!!! - and was very intrigued as to what they might have to offer to the rest of the world based on their unique heritage.

Cool! Good talk, thanks! So this is why you missed the singularity convention must of been a difficult choice. Peter Thiel, David Rose, were there and Mark Gorenberg also, he also remembered you there with good word -http://www.vimeo.com/7443559
