A little perspective on how hard it is to spot Burrowing Owls -- can you find the owl in this shot? Taken on the western side of Clifton Court Forebay, near the fishing levee and parking area, in Contra Costa County.

One of only two Acorn Woodpeckers we saw that day at Black Diamond Mines. They are highly social birds that live in colonies, so one normally sees many at once. Perhaps their colony was a ways off, out of site of the trails. Do members of this species ever separate from their colony and live solo/duo for period of time, i wonder?
